Purpose: The purpose of this speech is to inform my audience that excess consumption of added sugar is detrimental to their health and the health of their loved ones. I also want to inform my audience of the addictive qualities of sugar, and how sugar consumption leads to desiring more and more. I want my audience to become aware of where added sugars are hiding and limit their intake of added sugars. My central idea is that by limiting added sugars, my audience will experience better health and will no longer exhibit signs of sugar addiction.

Intended Audience: My ideal audience for this speech would be adults who are concerned about their health and their family’s health. The topic is also appropriate for any person who would like to make steps towards a healthier lifestyle.

Significance: This topic is very significant to my audience because decreasing, or eliminating, the consumption of added sugars will increase their quality of life, decrease the severity of health issues, and lead to an overall healthier lifestyle.

Presentation Plan

I. Introduction

a. Audience hook: How would you react if I told you that you, and your family, are likely addicted to a powdery, white substance? You would tell me I was crazy, right? What if I told you that addictive substance was sugar, and that consuming it is causing many of your health issues? Does that seem more likely?

b. Thesis statement: Research suggests that sugar is an addictive substance, and has been linked to serious health issues.

c. Preview of Main points:

i. The brain responds to the consumption of added sugar in the same way it does addictive substances.

ii. The consumption of added sugar increases the risk of heart disease, obesity and even mental illness.

II. Main Point 1: Sugar affects the brain in a way similar to addictive substances.
