There were many scientists that had their contribution towards an atomic model. They found a way to model an atomic model and the one that stood out the most to me was Earnest Rutherford’s model of an atom. Rutherford was an English physicist who conducted his gold foil experiment. He discovered the positively charged center of the atom- the nucleus, as well as discovered positively charged protons. Rutherford also determined that atoms were mostly empty space. An atom consists of subatomic particles which are protons and electrons. J.J. Thomson suggested the ‘’Plum Pudding Model’’ in which the protons and electrons are arranged in the atom. Rutherford wanted to test Thomson’s hypothesis by conducting the gold foil experiment. During this gold foil experiment, he found new information about the composition of an atom. Rutherford result in this was if Thomason’s model was correct, then the mass of the atoms would spread. Rutherford discarded the ‘’ Plum Pudding Model’’. He created his own model. His atomic model shows that atoms consist mainly of space. the mass of the atom is concentrated in the nucleus which is a small core at the center of the atom. The nucleus has a positive charge. The electrons move around the nucleus like planets orbit the sun. The atom is neutral as its has the same number of positive charges and negatively charged electrons. Rutherford nuclear model assumed the electrons outside the nucleus, either to be stationary or moving in a circle. Thus if electrons were stationary they would have been attracted towards nucleus and would have fallen into the nucleus. Rutherford’s model (planetary) is the model I chose to do. I chose this model because of how Rutherford’s conduct his experiment to test Thomson’s. I used different materials for my project. I used different sizes and color of fuzzy balls to represent the electron and protons. I used fuzzy pipe cleaners as a way to show the energy level around the nucleus. This way it would look like...
