Introduction to Community
Lawrenceville located in the state of Georgia, and the county of Gwinnett is one of the oldest cities in Metro Atlanta. It is home to over 30,00 citizens and has a variety of activities that makes it an ideal place for families to live. With a very warm climate, where winter is very short with temperatures in the 40’s and 50’s makes Lawrenceville home to a diverse population. Lawrenceville is a very young city in regards to age with the median age being 34. Lawrenceville is one of the most populated city in the state of Georgia. The largest ethnic/racial groups in Lawrenceville “are Black (38.4%) followed by White at (33.1%), and Hispanic at (19.4%)” (Georgia Department of Human Services, n.d.). Although the median household income in Lawrenceville when checked in 2013 was $38,785, many individuals in the city of Lawrenceville are living in poverty and most of them are children. According to the United States Census Bureau (2014), 18.2 % of Georgian residents live below the poverty line, and in the city of Lawrenceville 24.0% of its residents are living in poverty. Even though Lawrenceville is a city that is progressing in education the stench of poverty is a major hurdle that many citizens have to deal with on a daily basis.
Introduction to State
The state of Georgia is located in the southeastern part of the United States. It is a state that is prone to more good weather than bad. As one of the former thirteen colonies in America Georgia’s history is riddled with slavery and confederacy. Due to this dire history tensions between minority communities and the white communities are still evident in the state today. Georgia is home to over 10 million residents, of those residents 59% are White, 30% are Black, Hispanic/Latino 8%, and other races about 3% (United States Census Bureau, 2014).
