Transformational leadership is a style that brings about positive change in others. A person
Who possesses this leadership style is able to get others on board and to get them excited about
the changes in the process. In other words it is “the ability to get people to want to change, to
improve, and to be led” (Hall, Johnson, Wysocki, & Kepner, 2009). In order to be successful with
this leadership style, some basic principles must be embraced. Hall et al (2009) identify describe
those principles as setting a positive and ethical example for others, encouraging creativity and
innovation in others, encouraging team spirit, and consideration for the individual.
With respect to the individual, consideration means asking the employee about his or her
Individual goals and identifying ways to help the individual achieve those goals, within the
organization. The transformational leader may find more challenging tasks or positions that are
Suited to the individual. Such a leader may also consider matching talents and abilities with specific
roles, when delegating responsibilities. This is one means of getting others on board, when an
organization is going through a change process. Keeping others involved is another means of
getting employees on board with a change process. When employees believe their contribution
is important, they are more likely to take an active interest in the process. Williams (nd) also
describes the importance of encouraging individual employee development and empowerment
as critical factors in inspiring others.
Transformational leaders are often noted for their energy and enthusiasm. However, they
are not charismatic in the sense that others will blindly follow. Charismatic leaders may display the
same sense of commitment and enthusiasm. However, their ethical standards and expectations
