Fort Sumter

•In His Inauguration, Lincoln Repeated to not Interfere with Slavery where it existed he said it would be unlawful

•That Day, Confederate Troops Surround Fort Sumter (northern fort) with a ring of fire it was on southern soil

•April 4, 1861 Lincoln Chooses to Resupply Fort but President Davis decides to halt Lincoln’s actions

•Confederacy Attacks Fort

•Major Robert Anderson surrenders after 30 hours of battle THIS IS THE BEGINNING OF THE CIVIL WAR

•Lincoln Calls for Troops and Imposes a Blockade 7500 militia men

Blockade on southern states

•Supreme Court Ruled this as an Existence of War

Beginnings of Conflict

•April 17, 1861 Confederacy Chose Richmond, Virginia as it’s Capitol

•11 Secession or Confederate States

•23 Union States

•Many southerners Made Great Sacrifices to Remain Loyal (Union) to the Confederacy

•Advantages and Disadvantages

•Generals: Ulysses S. Grant, and Robert E. Lee

* Didn’t know what side to take but in all he said he had to remain loyal to his heritage

Advantages and disadvantages:

* North had industry and 20 million people and they had Wheat which was bringing in more money than cotton

* 9 million in the south had transportation waterways and railroads and agriculture which gave them finance

Military advantages

* South – home advantage defending territory and more experience leaders

* North – more military power ships arsenal fire arms ect.

* North – Ulysses S. Grant

* South- Robert E Lee

It was a new war for people because it was a brother versus brother war: brothers were literally fighting brothers and neighbors were literally fighting neighbors. It divided the country and tore it in half.

•Southern Victory

•South Begins to Mobilize its army

* Jefferson Davis calls for roughly 500,000 more men

•North Organizes an Navy
