Homeschooling

Homeschooling or home education is an educational option in which children are taught by a parent or tutor inside their home rather than in a traditional public or private school (Wilson). In 2010 two million students were being homeschooled (Bentz). Although homeschooling is becoming more popular amongst parents there are still many controversies. The main concern of parents and educators who disagree with home schooling is isolation and the lack of social development a child might have if he or she misses out on the social interactions provided in a traditional school experience. However not everyone disagrees with homeschooling. Many parents like the idea of homeschooling but lack the time or money to homeschool their child. Homeschooling offers immense possibilities and flexibility for the parents as well as the child/students. Statistics shows that children who are home schooled have higher academic grades, which is just one of the several reasons why parents choose to switch from public or private to home school (“Homeschooling”). Parents, children, and school counselors should discuss and research homeschooling if a child is not succeeding in a traditional school or if a parent is not satisfied with the child’s current education. Home school is an excellent choice and should always be considered in order to ensure the best possible education for every child.

Customized education is by far one of the greatest benefits of homeschooling. It is well known that nearly all schools offer a one-size fits all curriculum. This curriculum is actually designed for one learning style and not every child has this learning style ("Reasons to Homeschool"). It is unfair to those who learn differently to be taught in a way that they don’t understand.
