What are the characteristics of a problem?

Some characteristic of a problem are clarity, time issues, items, relationships, interfering or opposing goals. It is also something that needs to be considered, solved, or answered. Misgiving, objection or complaint is more characteristics.

How might a problem present itself?

A problem could take many different forms. A problem is an issue that could be blocking progress of an objective. A problem could become an issue if there is a break down in communication. I see this all the time at Boeing. Between each shift there seems to be something lost in translation, which results in processes being done over or taking extra time to figure out what went on. A problem can also go against what you believe or a routine one might have. It may also be something that makes you change your course, an obstacle. Sometimes a problem can happen because of the lack of attention. It leads to miscommunication, damaged relationships, and failed processes.

How should a problem be investigated and identified?

When investigating a problem, you must ask the all important who, what, when, where, why and how questions. This will help narrow down the issue, so you might be able to achieve the results you were hoping for.

What are the five steps to be considered while framing a problem?

1). Figure out the problem: need to know and understand what the issues are.

2). Brainstorm solutions: Gather/ create ideas to solve your issue

3). Down select the solutions to reach the best one: remove the idea’s until you arrive at the best decision

4). Act on your decision: Put your decision in motion

5). Evaluate or monitor the results to see if it was successful: need to continue this process because sometimes it could take longer. If you don’t achieve the results you were looking for, you might have to look at some of the ideas you didn’t use.
