As a freshman in high school I started my first job at a local grocery store called Harvest Fare. I worked there for about a year and while I was there I didn’t realize how many unethical business practices were going on around me. I worked as a cashier there in the beginning then moved on to work in the bakery. The child labor laws act requires many different regulations for minors. Being a freshman I was the age of 16 years old, this requires me to get a 30 minute break for every 5 hours worked. I know that many times I was given a 15 minute break for working 6 hours. To add on to that unethical practice, I know a friend of mine that was the same age who spent more then the 12 hour combination of school and work. There is many steps that can help the future minors who work in areas that do not get the required break. Starting with standing up for yourself and becoming knowledge of the minor laws that you have a right to, telling your boss you need to take a break is a helpful reminder to keep the regulations set. As a company, Harvest Fare could put up the minor law regulations on a poster in the office to remind the managers of the laws. The clock in/out machine at my workplace now will now send a report to our distract manager if our minors do not get a 30 minute break when they work more then four hours. As well as if the clock in/out machine doesn’t let them clock back in after break unless it’s the full 30 minutes will help them get the full time.
