Changing does Make a Change

Changing one’s name and moving to an unfamiliar place to work might sound like an exciting and passionate adventure to most people, few people would break from their daily routine. The thought seems like a crazy and distant fantasy. Though it might be hard to handle the confusion and loss when changing one’s name and living under a new identity, in some circumstances people have to. In the passage of “My Summer at an Indian Call Center” by Andrew Marantz, the author writes about his experiences and the stories of his colleagues at a Dehli Call Center to illustrate how foreign cultures have invaded India and the impact on the people trapped inside the cultural collision. Andrew Marantz unfolds his story as a spectator, while Manuel Muñoz, being a Mexican, which is another culture that is pressured to be assimilated, stresses his sufferings from an inside angle. In his passage “Leave Your Name at the Border,” he recollects the sad issue that his culture’s names, language, and culture are gradually losing out when Mexicans try to blend into American culture. Both passages use terms like “globalization” and “anglicization” frequently. Globalization is a process in which products, languages, and cultures from different parts of the world integrate with one another. As mentioned in the passages, India is undergoing a tremendous change in adapting cultures from America and Europe. Also, Mexicans suffer from anglicization which is a developing process in which the usage of native languages is being converted to English usage. The same suffix “-ization” illustrates the same nature of these two words, which is “change.” Change is not always as a negative term as it is in the above passage. Instead, it can also be hopeful.
