Remember the Titans - The 6 Step Decision Making Process

Denzel Washington portrays Herman Boone as the Head Coach at T. C. Williams High School, in 1971, after the United States Supreme Court ruling ended segregation in all public schools. Along with Coach Boone is Coach Yoast, Assistant Coach, who was the head coach and respected by the members of the community and Gerry Bertier, team captain. Gerry has become the team captain because he is the most out spoken and he believes he has to look out for the other white team members. Even when he is appointed the official team captain, he has some tough decisions to make in reference to deciding what is right and wrong and what will go against what everyone believes. When Ray does not block and Rev suffers an injury, Gerry had to make some critical decisions.

Gerry knew there was a problem with between the black and white team members and also with the community and the students in the school excepting each other because of the racial undertones. The white team members did not want to accept having a black coach appointed over the previous white coach Yoast and the black team members believed it was their time to show what they brought to the table as far as playing football. So Gerry was put in a position of being fair and showing everyone that any decision he would have to make would be for the betterment of the team.

The alternatives Gerry had before him was to ensure all were treated fairly and to bring unification between both races. One way to show this was to interact with both races and to be a mentor to the whole team. In order to evaluate this he had to set aside any prejudices he had to show a unified front for the entire team regardless of their race.
