Obesity: An American Epidemic

Eating right is the first solution for the obesity problem in America. A balanced diet is very important to maintain a healthy weight. One’s body needs to consume a set amount of nutrients and hormones. According to The Perfect 10 Diet, insulin, glucagon, leptin, thyroid hormone, human growth hormone, cortisol dehydroepiandrosterone, estrogen and progesterone, and testosterone are all important hormones that the body needs to function properly. Below are the descriptions of how these 10 hormones function as explained by Dr. Aziz.

First of all, insulin is used to regulate food storage and metabolism. The excess production of insulin is caused by low-fat, high carbohydrate diet. Production of insulin is more likely to wear out and completely stop. A lack of insulin production will cause high blood sugar and will lead to diabetes. Zinc, chromium and exercise are critical for regulating insulin levels. Brewer’s yeast, whole-grain breads, meats, eggs, shellfish, seafood and dark meats are all foods that should be consumed.

Unlike insulin, glucagon melts away the fat. Insulin and glucagon are not present at the same time. Glucagon is inhibited when insulin is in the bloodstream and when food is available. When one is continuously eating one will never lose weight because glucagon is inhibited. To prevent inhibition of glucagon eat a diet low in sugar and exercise. Eating good fats, protein, and avoiding bad carbs and sugars will allow glucagon production to regulate (Aziz, 2010).

Leptin controls the storage of fat around the organs and under the skin and controls appetite. High amounts of leptin will cause one to be hungry. High consumption of sugar and high insulin levels cause excessive levels of leptin. High blood pressure, heart disease, stroke and obesity are all associated by high leptin levels. Avoiding trans-fat, bad carbs, sugars and sweets can help to balance leptin levels. Eating natural fats, fish, vegetables, fruits and...
