The Syro-Ephraimitic war was a war in which a coalition was formed between Syria and the Ephraim against Assyria so Assyria wouldn't expand into their territories. Syria and Ephraim asked King Ahaz of Judah to join their alliance, but he refused. Ahaz went to the prophet Isaiah and asked him for guidance. Yahweh told Isaiah to tell Ahaz that he shouldn't be afraid and should trust that he would handle things. Ahaz didn't listen, and bargained with Assyria, and was able to have the siege of Jerusalem lifted. Since Ahaz had betrayed Yahweh by going against him, Isaiah prophecies and tells Ahaz that he will allow Assyria to punish Judah for the king's lack of faith. Yahweh also gives hope of peace saying that a woman will give birth to a son and his name will be Immanuel. According to the prophecy, by the time the boy is able to speak, Yahweh will rescue his people from the crisis they were involved in, and Assyria will be destroyed. Immanuel is possibly Isaiah's son. In chapter 8 of Isaiah, Isaiah's wife gives birth to a son. Yahweh told Isaiah to call his name Maher-shalal-hash-baz. The message of this name was that the threat that Ahaz saw that Assyria possessed would no longer be.
