MCA Background
The Midwestern: Contemporary Art Museum is one of the nation’s largest museums dedicated to modern art. The museum displays artwork through paintings, sculptures, photography, video, film, and performance arts. Over the time it’s been open, the MCA has developed into a major shrine to contemporary art.
In the early 1970’s, Peter and Catherine Smith developed an interest in contemporary art. They began to purchase a collection of art in the minimalist genre as well as new realists painting and conceptual art works. By 1980, the Smith’s collection was recognized by supporters of the MCA. June of 1981, Peter was invited to become a member of the MCA Board of Trustees.
