Members of nearly every major street gangs, some prison gangs and outlaw motorcycle gangs have been identified on both domestic and international military installations.

Deployments, transfers have helped facilitate the spread of gang activity within the ranks of the military

Since the mid 1980s, it has become apparent that what affects society can and does affect the ranks of the military.

But probably to less of a degree

Being a member of a gang is not illegal therefor by law the military has to allow gang members to enter

Drugs and gang related violence has infected all ranks of the U.S. military

Graffiti is one of the first indicators of gang activity and usually is suggestive of the presence of gang members

Every military instillation does not have a gang problem

Gang membership can be encountered in 4 basic areas:

1. Enlisted ranks – Being a part of a racially diverse unit does not mean that racism is not practiced all or part of the time. Because of the DREAM act, U.S. citizenship can be granted to undocumented immigrants in exchange for military service. This is a new recruitment tool for the military and some of these people may have gang connections.

2. Dependents – The presence of graffiti in the housing area can be a sure sign of dependent involvement with street gangs.

3. Civilian employees – Money is a powerful and key motivator for gang members.

4. Ranks of officers

Military personnel have been involved in gang related crime off base.

White supremacists groups seem to recruit from adult enlisted ranks only!!

Field strategies, knowledge of munitions storage, use and disposal and training strategies has been taken from military.

There is evidence that suggests some gang members are actually sent into the military to learn about military tactics.

It occurs nationally and internationally, on board ships, and on land bases.
