Art is a fundamental part of learning, and a fundamental part of our experience as humans. Many times it is viewed as mere “entertainment” and something to take for granted, but studies more and more point to the various forms of art as having heavy implications for the classroom. Each area of emphasis, dance, visual art, theater, music, has a separate definition, but each of these are deeply intertwined. One cannot experience theater without being immersed into the imaginary world with sounds and music. Dance goes hand-in-hand with music as well, though both of these can be experienced silently and enjoyed. Even visual art has connections with music, being linked together as far back as Isaac Newton equating certain colors to certain music notes (Gelineau, 2015).

Visual art is a form of expression that involves the manipulation of objects. It is the stuff we see such as ceramics, paintings, drawings, sculptures, photography and many others. Within the study of visual art, one will learn of the elements of art as well as the principles. These tend to vary by programs, but the basic elements of visual art include line, space, texture, color and shape as well as others (Gelineau, 2015). Through the manipulation of these elements and following (or being aware) principles of balance, rhythm, emphasis, unity, variety and others. Visual art is something that is catching to the eye and often evokes an emotive response. Studies show the implications this has for education and because of this classrooms all over the country are decorated with art made for students as well as by students. Colorful posters are made to solidify learning, visually-pleasing anchor charts posted as reminders and many other uses of visual art occur in the classroom. When studying Literature, students can make a memory box for the book/short story/poem they are reading. They choose what is significant from their reading and what needs to be represented.
