Significant Contributions by Engineers to the Society in the Future
We often use the words ‘science and technology’. What does engineering has to do with science and technology? Junichi Sato, president of The Japan Federation of Engineering Societies did some research and concluded that engineering is an act of planning and designing something that contribute to the society by using and arranging science and technology. This implies that science is not equal to engineering. Engineering is coming up with something new based on a request from society whereas science is about discovering something existing in nature and then find the mechanism and the theory governing it. To illustrate this more vividly, engineering is about creating a complete product by applying scientific knowledge and technology, which is the skill of inventing something. On the other hand, the technology of inventing something is not perfect. Thus, creative arrangement is necessarily required. For that, engineers need a good planning and design that matched social demands. This is what engineering is all about. As we move to the future, human population will grow bigger and bigger. Due to this, human needs and demands will increase gradually. As a result, global warming effects will be more significant. Therefore, engineers have to ideate something new as a solution to manage the increasing need of food, energy, land etc. and also to handle global warming, which is the side product of increased population.
In order to accommodate the increased population in the future, engineers have to first consider making Earth a more sustainable planet. A new invention or technology is necessary so as to optimise the use of natural resources and recycling it to be used again. In the...
