The best of Shakespeare’s plays all include an important aspect, which helps develop the plat in a way where the audience gets a better understanding of the main characters. This aspect is a soliloquy, which is a solo speech by a main character whom communicates his inner thoughts to help how the strengthening or the deterioration of the mind of a character. Particularly in Macbeth, soliloquies aid in bringing Macbeth alive. Macbeth’s two-dimensional figure of just a brave, loyal subject of Scotland becomes a three-dimensional character with a persona that has motives and emotions in general. Soliloquies let the audience in on both the internal and external aspects of each main character, giving the audience information, and foreshadowing what direction the character is headed.

In Macbeth’s case, he is headed down a road of no return, where sins and murders will take over his life making tragedy to be the eventual future of Macbeth. In this Shakespeare play, the use of soliloquies gives the audience an insight into Macbeth’s deepest ambitions, fears, and personal conflicts, molding Macbeth’s future as a tragic figure, and creating a stronger bond between the character and the audience. Before Macbeth’s first soliloquy, the audience has been thinking of Macbeth as only a praised gentleman of Scotland that is loyal to his king at every level. However, after Macbeth presents his first soliloquy, the Macbeth character is brought to life. Macbeth is now portrayed as a real character, who the audience can relate to. The soliloquy has given Macbeth new ambitions and emotions, which Shakespeare uses as his foundation for developing the rest of the plot and the storyline of how Macbeth starts making his erroneous decisions. The Macbeth who fought with courage and strength on the battlefield against Scotland’s enemies has been reduced to a weak mind that is constantly contemplating whether to commit the murder of Duncan.
