Evaluation

Literacy is extremely important for young children. It not only helps with imagination, but it helps with grammar, communication, writing, and creativity. Most children would say the best genres to read are the ones that are fun to read such as modern fantasy or fiction books. The ones that take the mind to another world, ones with talking animals, or magical creatures. The three genres that may seem uninteresting to children are historical fiction, biographies, and informational books; reason being is children judge the book by its cover and do not give them a chance. It is the duty of educators to introduce these genres in a way that appeal to the children. If more children would read them chances are they would love these genres. This essay will showcase two books from each of those genres, and how to use each genre in the classroom setting.

The first genre that will be discussed is biography. Biography is a “written account of another person’s life” (Dictionary). One of the books that was picked for this genre is Who Was Anne Frank? By Ann Abramson. This book is for ages 8-14 and is perfect for learning about not only World War 2, but also who exactly Anne Frank was. The book cover is illustrated like a cartoon character and is very appealing for children. This particular book showcases the great story of Anne Frank while keeping very age appropriate. It contains words that are fit for ages 8-14 and also great illustrations to go along with the story. At the end of the book there is also a timeline written out of the major events in World War Two as well as Anne Frank life. The next biography book is about an author that most children grew up reading his books; Dr. Seuss. The book is called Who Was Dr. Seuss? By Janet Pascal. This book is for ages 8-12.
