Indonesia Its Religion

Indonesia, which is a country comprised of thousands of islands and a population of over 255 million people, would be an ideal location in which to establish a chain of hospitals to make access to healthcare facilities more readily available to the people who reside there.

As an overview of religion in Indonesia, I am establishing a foundation predicated on information extracted from https://en.wikipedia.or/wiki/Indonesia. Within Indonesia, even though religions freedom is stipulated in the Indonesian constitution, only six religions are officially recognized by the government: Islam, Protestantism, Roman Catholicism, Hinduism, Buddhism, and Confucianism. Statistically speaking, Indonesia has the world’s largest population Muslim-majority nation, at 87.2% as of 2010, with the majority being Sunni (99%). Among the Muslim population, the Shias and Ahmadis consist of 0.5% and 0.2% respectively. Christians made up approximately 10% of the population with 7% Protestant; 2.9% Roman Catholic; 1.7% Hindu, and 0.9% Buddhist or other as of 2010. Most Indonesian Hindus are Balinese and most Buddhists, in more recent times, are ethnic Chinese. Hinduism and Buddhism remain major influences in Indonesian cultures even though each is now considered a minority religion. Islam was first adopted by Indonesians in northern Sumatra in the 13th century, through the influence of traders, and became the country’s dominant religion by the 16th century. Roman Catholicism was brought to Indonesia by early Portuguese colonists and missionaries. The Protestant denominations were largely the result of Dutch Reformed and Lutheran missionary efforts during Indonesia’s colonial period. A significant proportion of Indonesians, such as the Javanese abangan, Balinese Hindus, and Dayak Christians, practice a less orthodox, syncretic or combination form of their religion, which draws on local customs and beliefs.
