The Assessment Process

Professionals follow a three-phase process, known as the helping process, to provide the support and structure needed to help others. The helping process includes the following three phases: Assessment, Planning, and Implementation. Each phase is crucial for the client in order to be able to overcome problems in life, a client may fall back on one of the phases of the helping process, yet it is important to start again and continue the search for wellbeing. There is nothing wrong with having to go back and revise a step that was unclear as many of us may face the same challenge throughout our life’s more than once in situations such as; death, divorce, children leaving the nest, domestic violence, economic hardship, etc. There are three parts in the helping process; Assessment, Planning, and Implementation that need to be addressed to reach wellbeing.

The Assessment Process is the first step conducted during Intake that a human service professionals will use in helping the process. This part of the process starts as soon as the worker has a walk in client asking for service information or receives notice of the new client. The Assessment Process starts as soon as we are giving information in regards to our eligibility guidelines, screening them, making appointment to bring documents while creating the helping relationship. Initial contact may occur at any time depending on how an agency works, in some agencies social workers are front line staff that conduct the entire process from beginning to end without having a heads up of who will be served. This is considered an information gathering step in which we focus on what the client is saying about their emotional, mental, physical wellbeing and what they feel are the problems in their life.
