The Course:
This course is designed to cover the first semester of German language instruction in about one third of the usual time, a tall order for both students and instructors, yet one that is manageable and even fun when undertaken conscientiously. In order to get the most out of this course, you should plan on investing a lot of time in it. This class demands a considerable DAILY commitment beyond the hours spent in the classroom. You can expect to work as much outside the class as in it—reviewing material, doing homework, preparing for quizzes, practicing with your fellow students, trying out your new skills on German friends, and so forth. Falling behind will greatly diminish your benefit from and enjoyment of the course. But do not despair! Past experience has shown that the summer course can be a fun experience. You will meet a variety of interesting people from all over the country, and you will be astonished—even after a short time—how quickly you will learn German. Remember, too, that your instructor is there to help you. Do not hesitate to talk to them about any difficulties or questions that arise. Take advantage of office hours!
German 1 is intended for students who have not previously taken courses in German. All four foreign language skills (reading, writing, speaking, and listening) will be addressed to help you acquire a reasonable level of competency in the German language. With active participation and cooperation, you will have achieved the following by the end of the course:
