Physical Activity and Depression

Abstract

Several studies have indicated a link between depressive states and physical activity. Lack of physical activity while experiencing a depressive state may lead to an increase in the severity of symptoms. The purpose of this study (a) sought to determine if a high level of physical activity in people aged 60 and older can improve late-life depression for inactive people, (b) to discuss guidelines for research that have direct implications for those who live a sedentary lifestyle, (c) to identify the effects of exercise on depression using meta-analysis, and (d) to explore the idea that young adults with major depressive disorders who are physically active differ in their symptoms compared to those who are physically inactive. Results conclude that people who suffer from a major depressive disorder will experience a significant decease in their symptom profile by engaging in physical activity. Exercise is recommended for people with depressive disorders who are willing and motivated to participate in such a program.

Depression, also known as clinical depression, major depression or major depressive disorder is a medical illness that impacts the brain. This illness affects thoughts, feelings, behavior, moods, and physical health. Symptoms usually involve sadness, insomnia, fatigue, poor concentration, loss of appetite, excessive feelings of guilt and sometimes suicide. If left untreated, depression can impair daily functioning greatly. There are many treatments for depression with the effectiveness of each treatment varying.
