Business Communication

“Business depends on communication. People must communicate to plan products and services; hire, train, and motivate workers; coordinate manufacturing and delivery; persuade customers to buy; and bill them for the sale.” “In every organization, communication is the way people get their points across and get work done” (Locker & Kienzler, 2008, p. 4).

Communication is an important factor in determining the success of a business. Sharing good communication information throughout the organization creates better work environments and improves relationships from the president down to the employees and even to customers. Should there be poor communication within an organization or to its customers, the company infrastructure will not be solid and the company will start to falter. Employers these days consider communication skills just as important as the skills needed for the job. Effectively communicating is advantageous to all involved in the message.

Communication is seen and used in day-to-day activities. Without realizing it, communication is a big part of how people manage daily work activities and life. In my current role as human resources manager in the hospitality industry, how I communicate every day partners with the tools I need to make my day successful. Most of the day is spent on the phone, in meetings, or conversing through e-mail. The various forms of communication (verbal, nonverbal, and written) is how a day evolves, how new business starts, and how evaluation and follow-up is done on past events. One of the biggest pieces of communication is technology. An example is the outlook calendar. Without the outlook calendar, it would be difficult to communicate important appointments with coworkers making sure all had the date, time, subject, and notes needed to be successful.
