India has some of the best doctors in the world and is capable of providing international
quality health care, at least to those who can afford it. But, what about the others, those
who cannot manage huge medical bills? Do they have to settle for less or are
government hospitals their only choice?
Well, that need not be the case. Where we are is the beginning of a dream–a private
hospital that is giving affordable or even free health care to those in need.

Basavanna is just 32 years old. But this young father from Chamarajanagar district of
Karnataka has been facing major health issues due to three damaged heart valves. The
heart problem tires him out and leaves him breathless even after minor exertions. But,
he is right now on a journey, along with his wife Malini, heading to a hospital in Mysore
where he will undergo open-heart surgery. This hospital is Basavanna’s destination. It is
less than a year old and has been conducting surgeries for just a few months. The 200
bed, Narayana multi-specialty hospital has been built on the outskirts of Mysore on fiveand-a-half acres of land. It is just two storeys high and from the outside doesn't look like
the average private hospital. The driving force behind all this is Dr. Devi Shetty, a
leading figure in Karnataka’s healthcare scenario.
