Corrections a term used to describe the punishment of offenders for a crime they have committed. Corrections’ includes community and institutional sanction treatment programs and service for managing criminal offenders.
The administration provides education programs to help maintain control of the offenders. It is considered to be one of the best tools in corrections because it keeps the inmates busy in a positive way. The developing of rehabilitation programs for their particular need to integrate the offender back into society is a form of administrative leadership. They maintain a well managed prison to help create stability and uniformity. According to Mark Colvin, “Controlling inmates self interest is the key to controlling prisoners.” (The Free Library)
Disciplinary procedures used would be applying coercion to punish the inmate when he has been disobedient and broken the rules. Examples of non-violent sanctions would be locking the inmate in his cell while other are released, turning off of phones, gym or work privileges, shutting off electricity to outlets or withholding of necessities such as toilet paper or food. Physical coercion has diminished.
The layout of a facility can help control inmates by having the facility designed not only by the setup of the facilities but by having fixed security systems installed. These include close circuit television, security fences and alarm and detection systems. Another way of monitoring would be by lifting a piece of the roof to watch inmates in the walkway to control them. (Chapter 12, page 297)
