How is the word myth used popularly? For example, what does the statement, "It's a myth" mean? In contrast, how is the word myth used in the academic context? After considering the definition in your textbooks and course materials, write a definition in your own words.

Myths are old tales that tries to answer the primary human questions. A myth is also known as a glorified thought or stories surrounding a distinct phenomenon or famous person. The phrase “it’s a myth”, means when someone is telling you something and they do not know if it is a fictional story or a rumor. No one knows if it happened or not. In an academic context, a myth is a legendary or a traditional story, normally regarding some hero or event, with or without a discoverable basis of evidence or a natural explanation, specifically one that is interested with demigods or deities and explains some practice, rite, or phenomenon of nature.

In my own words a myth is a make believe tale with a little or no facts. In some instances it is a tale that has been told generation after generation about culture and its people. Some people calls a myth something that is just made up. For example, the Hawaiian myth is the story of the Menehune. As the legend is told the Menehune built the island of Oahu. The Menehune are short in stature, living in the forest and have never been seen by humans.

2. What are the most common mythological themes across different cultures? Why do myths from different cultures around the world address such similar or universal themes? Think about how myths explain the unknown and the tribulations of mankind.

Myths from around the world usually addresses similar themes, like the meaning of life and the heroes of the culture, because these things matter to everyone regardless of their background. Myths are always formed in the beliefs and attitudes of the author that created them. Themes are the significant and often common beliefs analyzed in a literary work.
