Pagtuki: A productive summer for the youth

A new in the series of weekly broadcast from Pagtuki, Ramon Aboitiz Foundation's radio program, was about “a productive summer for the youth”.

The 60-minute program aired through dyLA last April 17, 2010 aims to provide the public, especially the youth, with productive ideas they can do for the summer. It also aims to share with the public opportunities offered by the government which they can avail for the summer.

Part from its guests was Ms. Joy Villamor, Training Registration In-charge of Technical Education and Skills Development Authority (TESDA) – 7.

TESDA has a wide range offering of technical vocational courses on automotive servicing, building wiring installation, consumer electronic servicing, computer hardware servicing, dress-making and machining, plumbing, refrigerator and airconditioner servicing, art wielding and household services.

“This year, the trainings started last February 23,” Ms. Villamor shared. “They usually last for more than a month.”

Ms. Villamor accounted that they already have more than 500 registrants. Registration for the courses would only ask for basic and simple requirements: barangay clearance, high school report card or diploma, 1x1 picture, and medical certificate.

She also emphasized that out-of-school youth are given priority and free training. To qualify for this free program, one has to be 18-25 years old, at least high school graduate, with a family income of not more than Php 120,000 per annum and physically fit.

“TESDA has given opportunities to many. Some were hired abroad. Some locally.”

Another guest in the program was Mr. Elias Tecson, Program Management Divisions Chief of the Department of Trade and Industry (DTI) – Cebu Province.

Mr. Tecson states that DTI follows a mandate to conduct an entrepreneurial seminar. This seminar helps people to identify how to start a business.
