I. Introduction

Amazon is a leading online retailer which was founded by Jeffrey Bezos in Seattle in 1994. He spent over 20 years to transform Amazon from a simple book seller to the largest internet-based retailer in the United States. One month after the company was established, Bezos changed its name to “Amazon” because the Amazon River was nominated to be the most voluminous river in the world, and he wanted his company also became the biggest e-commerce platform on the earth.

II. Core Values

There are six core values for Amazon, that is, “customer obsession, ownership, bias for action, high hiring bar, frugality and innovation”. Unlike other companies, Amazon puts customers at priority, rather than its investors and competitors. “Customer obsession” in this situation does not refer to meeting the needs of each customer before the services, like how the companies such as Nordstrom do. Amazon emphasizes on “working backwards”, instead. It pays much attention to customers’ feedback and their advice. Caring more about customers’ satisfaction does not just make them happy, it is also the best chance to improve and fix the company’s system. “If you make a customer unhappy, they won’t tell five friends, they’ll tell 5,000 friends”, Bezos said.

Also, Amazon considers its employees as the owners of the company. Instead of high salaries, employees in Amazon are compensated by stocks. The logic behind the “ownership” value is that only when employees consider themselves as the owners of the company, they can and will work at their best efforts. “Bias for action” is another core value of Amazon. Usually, people think that only the exactly right decision should be put into practice. However, Bezos doesn’t mind to take wrong action occasionally because “if you decide that you’re going to do only the things you know are going to work, you’re going to leave a lot of opportunity on the table”. “Speeds matters in business” (Raj Bharti, 2015).
