A Tale of Two Stories

Part I

During my summer job I experienced a lot of situations where my personal values conflicted with what I was expected to do. It did not feel right to me so I decided not to go through with it. In one particular situation I was working with a customer who wanted to put a vehicle title into his name, but couldn’t due to the fact that he was missing a signature of the previous owner. When I told him this he told me that that individual was not in town that he lived in California five hours away. There was nothing I could do without that form signed, so I told him he had no choice. The customer ended up taking a step outside, sit in his car for a few minutes then come back in with the document signed. The document did not need to be notarized, which made it easy for anyone to forge a signature on those documents.

When he came in just a few seconds later I told him that I would not be able to accept this because I had just witnessed him sit in his car and sign the document. He proceeded to get angry telling me that the document does not need to be notarized so there is no proof that he did or did not sign it. Besides the fact that he just stated that gentleman lived five hours away I had witnessed him with my own eyes. I did not feel comfortable accepting the documentation and so I called my manager over to let them know of the situation. She told me that this call is up to me, if I do not feel comfortable accepting it I do not have to. She will not be upset, every employee should have the right to accept or deny work at their right if it interferes with their values.

I did not feel comfortable accepting it because my job was on the line. If I were to accept it and it comes back that the previous owner never signed off and then I get in trouble then I can lose my job or lose my license. It was not worth the business of one individual who my manager said it was ok to deny service of. It was a very easy decision since I did not have...
