1. Introduction

In 1844, William Miller and David Sime Cargill started a general distribution center, import and wholesale business in Colombo, Fort. The foundation was named the 'Place of Cargills'. An effective offer by Sir Chittampalam A. Gardiner saw the House of Cargills being consolidated as a Public Limited Liability Company on 1 March 1946.

In 1981 Ceylon Theaters gained controlling enthusiasm of the Company and Mr. Albert A. Page was delegated the Managing Director. Mr. Albert Page went ahead to end up the Chairman of Cargills on 26 November 1982.

Under the new administration, Cargills investigated the capability of developing on its exchanging legacy. Subsequently, in 1983 Cargills set up the first grocery store chain in Sri Lanka with the opening of its first outlet at Staple Street.

Cargills wandered into the generation of handled meats in 1993 when the Company put resources into its first assembling office Cargills Quality Foods, in Mattakkuliya. In 1996 Cargills gained the establishment permit for KFC and advanced on its mystery formula to convey items that suited the neighborhood sense of taste.

Cargills started sourcing products of the soil specifically from ranchers in 1999 when it built up its first accumulation focus in Hanguranketha. In 2002 it put resources into a dairy preparing plant and accordingly extended its outgrower system to incorporate dairy agriculturists. Cargills Magic frozen yogurt was the result of this attempt.
