Multicultural Counseling Video Analysis
When it comes to counseling or psychotherapy culture plays a big role. Culture is defined as the beliefs, customs, arts, etc., of a particular society, group, place, or time (“Culture”, 2015). Possessing multicultural skills and also understanding the different strategies used in order to help your client are important as a counselor. It is important to focus on cultural issues in counseling when your client is adjusting to a new cultural setting or if the problem presented is closely related to cultural world views. Multicultural skills are also useful when clients are experiencing prejudice or oppression, or if there are cultural differences between the client and counselor (Multicultural Counseling and Psychotherapy, 2001). In the video Multicultural Counseling and Psychotherapy both counselors use 14 different strategies and their multicultural skills to help their clients get a better understanding of the issues they are facing. The clients did not seem to notice that maybe them going to another state and experiencing new culture could be the reason they are having the issues they are having.
Counselors and Clients
The way counselor’s help their clients become aware of their own expression of cultural identity is by first understanding what the client is facing thoroughly and getting the client to express their cultural identity in many different ways. Puah is the first client and one multicultural issue she is experiencing is that she is away from her family. She is originally from Hawaii but is attending college in Illinois. This is a really big difference, and she rarely gets to talk to her family. She does not talk to anyone because she does not get alone with them because they are different.
