Being the world’s biggest aerospace company and primary producer of commercial airliners, defense, and space and security systems, Boeing has been around since the late 1800’s. Boeing has more than 159,000 employees in over 70 countries, with its corporate offices located in Chicago. Boeing is divided into two business categories. The first is Boeing Commercial Airplanes and the second is Boeing Defense, Space and Security. Boeing’s organizational structure is that of the Matrix design. The Matrix design is when functional and divisional forms tend to overlap one another. One example of this would be having an employee report to their individual project manager as well as to the manager who is in charge of the functional area of the project. With the Matrix defense, the employees and managers have two bosses to report to, a functional manager and a divisional manager. Boeing has a very high degree of flexibility and adaptability in the products they produce. The communication lines flow without restraint allowing accountability from both project teams and managers. Boeing is centralized in the fact that the high-level executives compose most of the decisions and pass them along to the lower levels for execution. Boeing has three organizational functions, those being human resources, marketing departments, and operations department. Boeing’s human resources develop and apply company growth activities. The marketing department leads strategic direction, revenue, brand development and market share. The operations department is responsible for the quality control, logistics, evaluations, and purchasing.
