This era is where television does not portray the same idea for more than a few seconds with nothing of significant meaning or value such as tediously working for long periods of time and paying bills. Instead, what is televised are shows that immobilize individuals who are watching, which proves Ehrenreich's assertion right to call the world in the television "eerie and unnatural." So "Why do we keep on watching?" asks Barbara Ehrenreich in her passage, "The worst years of our lives." Well the answer lies clear, and that is simply because it gives society a glimpse into the lives that they wish to live.

Some people just pass their time imagining if they could do what they saw in television and how it would change their lives. While on the other hand there are others who spark some inspiration in result of what they see on television and actually turn their lives around. This is proven to be true by some reality shows such as American Idol and The Biggest Loser. For instance, the American Idol, a singing competition series, motivate individuals to pursue one's dreams. Likewise, The Biggest Loser galvanize others to work their their way into a much healthier lifestyle.

In addition, there are cartoons that are beneficial when it comes to helping kids learn the bitter realities of life through a sugar-coated television screen. Cartoons such as the Lion king, Mulan,The little mermaid, portray real life occurrences such as life and death, aspirations, and indepence.

So even though there is a sense of truth in the whole "root vegetable" concept, the choice of becoming that lazy "couch potato" is truly determined by the viewer. How we like to take in what we see and how willing WE are to change OUR lives. After all.. I am the master of my fate, I am captain of my soul!
