What struck me most in the movie is the courage, perseverance, and dedication of Ms. Gruwell to make a change in a very challenging environment, which also took her time to get used to as a new citizen of the neighborhood and a new teacher in the high school. She did not let her new surroundings to interrupt her vision for her class, even though she was very overwhelmed at first. Despite all the challenges – the Principal and Head Teacher who didn’t believe in her enthusiasm, methods and vision to unite her class; her students from room 203 who seemed like the type of students who can never be controlled or tamed by anyone; and her deteriorating relationship with her husband, her focus on her goal for her class did not budge. Not a single day in the film is shown wherein she was in the verge of giving up on her students. She was rejected by her students, intimidated by her colleagues, left by her husband – all because of her passion to make a change and teach her students. She was the only one who stood up against everyone and she believed in the things that everyone around her didn’t believe anyone could do.

Ms. Gruwell is my inspirational character in the Freedom Writers, because I admire all the qualities she had shown for her students. These things she portrayed inspires me to become a braver, more courageous person to be able to reach out and help others who are in need or do something that anyone didn’t believe is necessary to do.

We have learned to conform with the standards of the society, even when in fact, it is not good. So many times, we know what is supposed to be done, but we think that it is already a norm, so we end up not doing anything. With this movie, it could help revive the hope in the minds and the souls of the people who will be able to have the chance to watch it to make a change.
