Who Is My Ideal Servant Leader?

Initially, a servant leader must be a servant. It must start with having the feeling that one really wants to serve others then mindful choices make one strive to lead. There is a great different between the leader-first and servant-first. The leader-first focuses on the serving the people’s first concern needs while the servant-first focuses on the well being of the community and the people in it. A servant-first leader shares his or her power and puts the needs of others first. (Greenleaf, 1977)

My ideal servant leader is Nelson Mandela. He was the chief among African leaders. He is also one of the politicians to have nearly accomplished worldwide respect and athwart the political field. Mandela spent 27 years in Robben Island, where he was imprisoned. He was free in 1990 expressing no anger towards his oppressors. Instead, he advocated settlement between South Africa’s divided races in order to promote equality in their country. Mandela is a type of leader who can stimulate confidence inside or even outside their country. As South Africa’s first democratically elected president, Mandela faced the challenge of joining the country’s racial groupings and a disjointed public service whose releasing order was in favor of the white population. He is also recognized for taking a tough stand versus the giant world powers especially when defending Africa. As president he was not restricted in accepting the African National Congress’ former associates such as Libya’s Mummar Gaffati and the head of the Palestinian Liberation Organization, Yasser Arafat, despite of the judgments they have received from the United States. His position also made strong relationships with their former communist associates, which are China and Russia, past communist allies of the African National Congress.
