Mental health encompasses psychological, emotional and social well being of people, mental illnesses can affect how people feel, think and act therefore proper mental health education is required in order to assist patients suffering from mental illnesses. Patients or consumer health care involves treating patients as partners, involving them in decision making, and helping them feel a sense of responsibility in managing their care while respecting their individual values and concerns. It plays a significant role in ensuring the proper delivery of mental health care to patients suffering from mental illnesses. Schizophrenia is a long term brain disorder that causes hallucinations, disorders in thinking and delusions. The exact cause of the disorder is unknown however, it can be attributed to a number of factors for instance, genetics, the environment and imbalanced brain chemicals. This paper examines the concept of consumer centered health care and how it is manifested in the delivery of mental health services in patients suffering from Schizophrenia.

Consumer and patient centered health education is a new approach that gives emphasis to partnerships and collaboration between health care service providers, the patients, nurses and their families. In consumer centered mental health education there are several lengths to be considered such as respecting patients preferences that may always change over time, values and beliefs by customizing care to the individual by integration and coordination to increase the overall patient’s experience of these care as it is an important factor in obtaining best outcomes (Alwyn.com.au, 2015).
