I choose Salmonella infection as also called Salmonellosis. It is an illness that affects the intestines. It is caused by Salmonella bacteria. A person can be infected from eating or drinking contaminated food or water. Pork, chicken, beef, eggs, and unpasteurized milk are more likely to carry the bacteria than other foods. Salmonella is most often passed through food that hasn't been cooked well enough or that contacts raw meat or egg.

Symptoms often appear 12-72 hours after you are infected. Symptoms include; Fever, stomach cramps, diarrhea, vomiting and nausea. In order to diagnose Salmonella a sample of your stool is taken and checked some times more than one sample may be needed.

Treatment is usually not needed. Most people get better within 5-7 days. In some cases, antibiotics are given. To help stay hydrated, you should drink plenty of fluids while recovering. Taking antidiarrheal medications are not recommended unless told to do so by your health care provider. Taking this medication can prevent the body from getting rid of the bacteria. It can also cause the infection to last longer.

If no improvement in symptoms after 2 days you should call your healthcare provider. Also if you notice blood in your stool, severe vomiting, severe abdominal pain, or signs of dehydration.(dry or sticky mouth, decrease urine output or very dark urine.

A person can decrease the chance of getting this infection by doing simple tasks, washing hands with soap and water often. Washing hands after bathroom use, changing diapers, or handling pets can help prevent this infection. Cooking pork and ground meats at least 160 degrees F. Wash and peel fresh fruit and vegetables before eating. Wash cutting boards and utensils with hot water and soap before and after each use. Clean boards and counters with bleach or disinfectant.

I have only known people with suspected Salmonella infection, never really diagnosed. Simply because it runs it course and the person feels better...
