Choosing a leader for this country is difficult. I think many people find it uneasy because of the history we have had with our leaders. We have to admit that that history is not a very great one. It is important to be competent, knowledgeable, and qualified. However, the most important thing to be a leader is to have a heart of service. Being a leader is not about being served or having a title but rather putting other people’s needs first. It is always thinking about what is beneficial for “them” and not you. I think this is where many of our leaders fall short. They get blinded by the power they acquire and their reason and purpose for service gets lost. More than anything, I think that the quality we must look for in our leaders is their ability to be servants to be selfless, and to genuinely love and care for the country and its people. More than being able to understand and use the political jargons and taking to heart the statistics and the ways on how to change them, more than being extremely knowledgeable in the way things work and how they should work, the leader that I want should be ready to serve this country and its people with both compassion and authority. In my experience, the leaders that I want to follow are those who show genuine care for the people and their cause. Not only that but the leaders who also do not need to demand respect from other people as they have naturally gained it by giving respect themselves. Yes, it is very important to be knowledgeable, intelligent, and capable of presenting oneself; but at the end of the day, it all boils down to what lies in their hearts.
