1. Describe the data storage industry in China in this case. Include comments on technology and issues in accepting new technology?

The data storage in China is a relatively a new technology compared to the rest of the world. The Chinese culture are especially precarious, when it comes to change. According to china-briefing.com China accounts for only two percent of the global cloud computing market, but this is fast evolving. Over the past decades the inadequate support from the Chinese government, has made very difficult for many small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) to adopt public cloud storage as a form of backing up their data. It is estimated about 20 percent of large companies in China were still using outdated North American standard methods (e.g. CDs) as the primary form to back up data and the close to 30 percent were using external drives, while the rest of business were not using any form of back up at all. (Taylor & Hao, 2012)

The biggest concern is China is security; this is a great challenge because large amount of data is being collectively stored and managed. In a study conducted by Accenture Institute for High Performance stated “Fifty-nine percent of Chinese respondents say they are very concern about data security, privacy and confidentiality in the cloud, compared to 50 percent in the US and 42 percent for nations besides China” (Alter, Peng, Runhua & Harris, 2010).

Despite the concept of public cloud storage not being appealing to most companies in the Chinese market, other variants of cloud storage are emerging known as private clouds.

This variant form of storage has an advantage over the public cloud, because the data is kept locally. Small and Medium-sized Enterprises in China are more attracted to this form of storage, due to the privacy and security features it offers with a self-managed storage system.
