Introduction
The organization I choose is the Maintenance Group in the United States Air Force.
Let’s define “Organization” according to Shockley-Zabalbak it is defined as a “result of the process of organizing, dynamic system in which individuals engage in collective efforts for goal accomplishment” (2009). The Maintenance Group is composed of 3 squadrons and its mission is to conduct United States Air Forces in Europe’s only airlift, airdrop and aero-medical evacuation operations flying the C-20H, C-21, C-37, C-40B and C-130J aircraft, as well as provide combat airlift and operate the Air Force's premier installation to enable and assure strategic capabilities.
I spent a week observing the day to day operations of the organization during their Operational Readiness Inspection. In this paper I will address the areas I observed (1) group and team communication, (2) cohesiveness and (3) conflict. I will touch on problems I detected that impact the group’s productivity, and make suggestions based on my knowledge of group dynamics to resolve problems the organization is facing.
Importance of Group and Team Communication
The Maintenance Group has a continuous focused on a team concept; many organizations have just begun to adopt this concept. According to French & Bell; “A team is defined as a group of people who have complementary skills; a higher commitment to common goals and have a higher degree of interdependency and interaction” (1999). The Air Force has leaned more towards training a team to make required decisions in the last 7 years. During my observation, the Maintenance Group demonstrated the ability to construct an efficient team and exhibited how to empower them to oversee a variety of projects.
