Answer each of the following questions as completely as possible. Your answers should

be no longer than a few sentences.

a) Make a list of all the foods you consume in one typical day.

b) Take a look at each food item and try to determine the different species

of plants that each of these food items contain. Use ingredient lists, recipes

and the internet (include references), but keep in mind that ingredients

(flour, oil etc) are not always the same as species (wheat, soybean etc).

c) Use Table 12.1 in chapter 12 in your text book as a guide to estimate

what approximate percentage of your diet is accounted for by the top 25

food crops.

Consider the clothes you wear on a day to day basis. Look at the labels of

the clothes you are wearing and some of those found in your closet. What

types of plant fibers are used to make your clothes? How many can you

find?

Look through your textbook and list four products made from plants

which you use in your life for something other than food and clothing. Be

sure to note which plants and how each product is useful.

4.

Briefly describe two sites where evidence of early crop cultivation has

been found and name the crops thought to have been first domesticated

near those sites.

List four plants that are thought to have been domesticated in the New

World including two from the Eastern United States and Canada.

6.

What is the most diverse group of plants on earth today? How do they

differ in terms of where the seeds are produced compared to other plants

like gymnosperms?

7.

Describe three ways that fungi are helpful to humanity and one major

ways in which they are harmful.
