Corporate social responsibility had provoked rancorous debate since twenty century. There are different views on corporate social responsibility. In Milton Friedman’s opinion (as cited in Cadbury, 2006), social responsibility of companies is aim at earn as much money for its stockholders as possible, while Abreu et al. (2012) believed that companies also are part of society and their activities need to benefit society. Apart from making profit, it is also the duty for companies to consider their stakeholder like customer, employee, community and also environment. Due to its controversial, it is worth to explore more about the argument for and against corporate social responsibility. In this essay, the importance of corporate social responsibility for the business will be discussed with the real business cases (E.g. Chinese dairy industry and Nike Limited) support, with a view to demonstrating that social responsibility is an inevitable element for organizational success.

There are a number of arguments against the view that social responsibility have an adverse effect for organizational success, which included lack of skills, dilution of purpose (Carroll & Shabana, 2010). It means that managers do not equip with social skills and experience to address social issue and pursue corporate social responsibility since managers are expected to handle the financial and operational problem in the business. Even they are expert, corporate social responsibility activity still is not relate to the primary aim of company and affect its productivity.
