Health care systems have been adapting and evolving in the world around them, which contains the patient’s they serve. There has been an increasing trend towards integrating health care systems, so that the continuity of patient care can be implemented among the many different health care organizations. Integrated health care IT projects must have a process to be successfully implemented within the organization. There are many factors that affect both failure and success of implementing an IT project, as in the Case Study-Memorial Health System CPOE Implementation. Organizations can learn from other IT project failures, which will help eliminate some of the barriers that occurred, or overlooked when previously applied.

Potential project failures occur when there is lack of communication within the health care organization and the project managers. Miscommunication about timelines and shared goals can detour a project, sometimes resulting in delayed or improper implementation of a project. There are several barriers that must be overcome or avoided, such as lack of purpose, leadership, or belief in the project. To avoid these factors, there must be the proper management or leadership established, with staff who can effectively communicate the goal of the project and the process in which implementation will occur. These leaders should also be the ones who encourage and support the change within both the staff and organization. Leaders should ensure that the objectives and the IT initiative are clear and successfully communicated among the staff.
