Non-Profit Organization (NPO): Ethics and Laws

A non-profit organization addresses areas of services that are of interest to the persons that created the organizations. The Board of directors governs the non-profit by conducting the affairs, being a compelling force, and ensuring proper conduct of the organization’s business. There is a concern about ethical governance; we know that governance has to be ethical in every area of the organization (Lowe, 2004).

Non-profits organizations are forced to take a hard look at themselves because of so many scandals involving the misuse of funds of charities that are well known, churches, and etc. Regulations monitoring the ethical behaviors of non-profit organizations begin with improvement of the board’s governance regarding self regulations being increased. Self regulation of non-profit organizations has become very popular with the Disclosure of transparency, especially with the internet because of easier public access to IRS forms 990 (for public charities) and 990F (for private foundations), allowing internet posting of 990s instead of making paper copies. There has also been an emergence of a new independent national watchdog organization (the three already established are going under review and rethinking of how they operate). In the end regulations monitoring ethical behaviors of non-profit organizations there is a need for greater self-regulation, organizational information needs to become public and transparent promoting self-regulation and accountability to the public.

In conclusion self-regulation in non-profit organizations has given a rise in how the board governs, and to eliminate scandal in the future. It is hard for independent watchdog organizations to monitor non-profits ethical...
