Diction, Imagery, Detail, and Syntax (DIDS) in Poetry—Worksheet

Instructions: Analyze the text you selected and fill out the following worksheet in detail. Provide specific examples from the text that support your analysis.

1. Write the title of the text you have analyzed here: “When I Was Young and Fair”

2. List at least three examples of diction in the text that add to the overall tone. Explain how each word contributes to the emotional power of the piece.

• Score-How she impolitely asks people to back off and how it portrayed her “bratty” self.

• Pine-Desperation and how it shows all the men chasing after her.

• Repent-how she looks back on her youth and realizes what she did was wrong and wishes she could go back and change it all.

3. List at least three examples of imagery in the text that add to the overall tone. Explain how each description contributes to the emotional power of the piece.

• “When I was fair and young”-she went through all of this at a young age.

• “Brave victorious boy”-describing Venus’ son and how confident he was, how he achieved many things and it helps readers understand why he had such an impact on her.

• “That neither night nor day I could take any rest” describes that throughout the days after, she was able to still find time to relax.

4. List the examples of important details the author chose to include. Explain how these details contribute to the emotional power of the piece. In my opinion, I don’t think the author mentioned how her attitude changed after she was no longer liked and she was no longer young.

The author explained how she felt and saw herself. It helps readers know the effect of what she used to do, contribute to how the people reacted towards her.

5. List the examples of important details the author chose to omit. Explain how these missing details contribute to the emotional power of the piece.

The Author didn’t explain thourougly what exactly happened to her, and didn’t elaborate on...
