COURSE DESCRIPTION

A survey of the political, social, and cultural development of the modern United States with emphasis upon the economic, social, and technological changes and the rise of the United States as a world power.

This is a linked course and requires concurrent enrollment in ENGL 110 Section 7160 taught by Ingrid Jayne.

STUDENT LEARNING OUTCOMES (SLOs)

For History Department SLOs, at the conclusion of this course, students will be able to:

a) analyze and synthesize historical sources to formulate a historical thesis.

b) explain relationships between the causes of historical events and their effects.

c) describe historical actors and events and explain their significance in historical and historiographical context

We will pursue and analyze six core objectives for our topics in Modern American History. They are:

1) Define, discuss and analyze major events in Modern American History, e.g. Reconstruction, the American West, Great Depression.

2) Trace and assess the evolution of the modern American presidency.

3) Examine reasons for the expansion of big business, industrialization, and urbanization.
