Passé Composé

(= came, saw, worked…) it expresses an event in the past that has been completed. It answers the question what happened? it is composed of an auxillary verb in the present and a past participle. The auxillary verb mostly used is Avoir with a few exceptions that use être. (DR MRS P VANDERTRAMP) the form of a past participle of a given verb depends on which verb group it belongs to:

-er | Parler-> | parlé |

-ir | Dormer -> | Dormi |

| Finir -> | Finir |

-re | Vendre -> | vendu |

* but many verbs have an irregular past participle (boire-> bu, prendre-> pris)

Imparfait

(= basically ‘ing’) Past tense verb used to say what you used to do on a habitual basis. It can also be used to indicate time, age, describe weather, express feelings, describe people and places. It is composed of a stem derived from the present tense “Nous” form of that verb then followed by the imparfait ending (which is the same for all verbs)
