1. In your own words, describe the characteristics to the three layers of the heart.

The epicardium which is a layer that surrounds the heart which is the fibrous pericardium that protects and secures the heart than myocardium is the actual muscular layer of the heart responsible for contracting and pumping blood throughout your body, while the endocardium is the thin innermost layer of tissue that makes direct contact with the blood pumping through the heart chambers (Anatomy and Physiology, 2013, p. 36).

2. Describe the anatomy and function of the heart valves? What role do the chordae tendineae, and papillary muscles have in association with the heart valves?

Tricuspid valve is located between the right atrium and the right ventricle (Anatomy and Physiology, 2013, p. 788). The pulmonary valve is located between the right ventricle and the pulmonary artery (Anatomy and Physiology, 2013, p. 788). Mitral valve is located between the left atrium and the left ventricle (Anatomy and Physiology, 2013, p. 788). The aortic valve is located between the left ventricle and the aorta (Anatomy and Physiology, 2013, p. 791). The papillary muscles attach to the lower portion of the interior wall of the ventricles (Anatomy and Physiology, 2013, p. 790). They connect to the chordae tendineae, which attach to the tricuspid valve in the right ventricle and the mitral valve in the left ventricle.
