The Global Water Crisis: A Rhetorical Analysis
Can you imagine life without water? In the article “Where Has All the Water Gone?” author Maude Barlow discusses water pollution and how it could affect the future of the earth. The article was written in The American Prospect’s website, which is an American political magazine. The main topics on the web page are politics and culture. The followers of The American Prospect use the website to get news information. The article was written in May 2008 (6 years ago), and this could affect the accuracy as it relates the current water pollution. The research done for the article maybe outdated and obsolete. Barlow is the national chairperson of the Council of Canadians, which would make her a reliable source. The author argues that if the government does not find a solution for cleaning water, it may be too late to provide clean water in the future. Barlow writes an effective article and makes the reader shocked from the information given on water pollution.
Barlow gives real life examples to prove how dirty water impacts human life. “More children are killed by dirty water than by war, malaria, HIV/AIDS, and traffic accidents combined.” (par. 2). The author uses emotional appeal by telling readers that children are dying from drinking dirty water. Instead of just giving facts on water pollution, Barlow makes the audience feel sympathy and sadness toward the children. The readers of the website generally use the website for getting daily news. However, when they read about water killing more people than diseases and accidents combined, the readers will become aware of the importance of the situation. Losing so many lives due to dirty water may shock the readers and have them question why nothing is being done to prevent such a simple task as providing clean water.
