The Malmstrom Air Force Base case study is an example for an organizational leadership were coercive powers over the subordinates has invoked threat and warning; thereby resulting undesirable consequences for non-compliance with a rule or policy.

Also it displays a management’s negligent approach to have necessary control measure to eliminate a frequent practice of fraud and cheating.

Qns: While the officers are responsible for their misconduct, why might the organizational leadership of the Air Force be a major contributor to this scandal?

The organizational leadership of the Air Force is a major contributor to this scandal,

Reasons can be gathered from the sources/news on the scandal; it has been quoted in several occasions; “that they (officers) felt pressure to score 100 percent on the proficiency tests. While 90 percent is considered a passing score, they said that their commanding officers would not promote them unless they scored 100 percent.” & also they say that “But both current and former missileers, as the launch officers are known, say that cheating has been a fact of life for decades.”

As mentioned above, the coercive measure practiced by the organisation pressurised the officers to attempt this misconduct and led to unethical conduct.

When the management and higher officials realised that there has been a trend in the repeated cheating for the tests, they should have researched and explored option that would aid the officer to excel their exams and have ensured proper control measured had to be taken account of

To combat the ethical drift that has occurred in the Air Force, sustained and committed efforts focusing across all domain of leadership are required to realign the service’s code of ethics within the management and the officers. A few effective methods have been listed below:

1. Arranged refresher session to update/upgrade the knowledge and skills level
